In late April, my younger cousin, Austin “A.J.” Budd was shipped out to begin basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, in the U.S. Army. With his boot camp experience coming to an end soon in early July, it felt like a perfect time to give him a shoutout. He is a lifelong Mishawakan who graduated in Mishawaka High School’s Class of 2023. When he was in high school, A.J. played varsity baseball, representing the Cavemen on the field. After graduating, he was drawn to do public service in some capacity. He was interested in possibly becoming a police officer but was considered too young. His love of law enforcement makes sense as his grandfather is a retired F.B.I. agent.
After looking at different avenues, he decided in December 2024 that he wanted to enlist as active duty in the U.S. Army. His goal is to be in the 82nd Airborne Infantry. I know that A.J. will do great in the Army and that he is fulfilling his dream. Our family has a longline of veterans, so it is fitting that he joined. This year is also a historic one to have joined, as it is the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. I applaud him for serving our great nation and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. We love you, A.J., and are enormously proud of you!
